Controlling Dust Generation During the Processing of Fine Powders

CHALLENGE

A customer encountered significant problems when processing a very fine, light, and “fluffy” powder. When the material was poured into a hopper, large amounts of airborne dust were generated. This caused both operational and environmental problems.

Key Issues

  • Significant dust generation during processing. This affects workplace safety and cleanliness.
  • Poor processability of the material in existing facilities.
  • No wetting effect, not even on the surface.
  • Conventional methods failed, including adding water or mechanical mixing.

Additional prerequisites

  • Dust emissions had to be kept to a minimum (both internally and into the surrounding environment).
  • The addition of water had to be kept to a minimum (due to its impact on the process and costs).
  • It had to be possible to continue processing the material in the existing facility

Product

DustCap 50

DustCap 50 transforms inert powder into a fully permeable system. It does this by reducing the surface tension of water, which displaces air and enables deep wetting. Full saturation is achieved in areas where water alone is insufficient.
  • Reduces the surface tension of water

  • Let the water soak into the powder

  • Displaces air between the particles (visible as air bubbles)

  • Ensures that the entire mass is moistened

By reducing the surface tension of water, DustCap 50 transforms inert powder into a fully permeable system. Air is displaced, enabling deep wetting. Complete saturation is achieved in areas where water alone is insufficient.

Benefits

  • Effective wetting of ultrafine powders. This allows for complete penetration into the bulk of the material where water alone cannot sufficiently wet it.
  • Significant reduction in dust emissions. DustCap 50 minimizes dust generation during processing, thereby improving safety and cleanliness.
  • Improved processability. The material is easier to handle and can be processed using existing equipment.

  • Lower water consumption and lower treatment costs. DustCap 50 limits water consumption to the minimum required for proper operation. In doing so, it eliminates the need for costly alternative treatments.
  • A cost-effective alternative to complex processing methods. This eliminates the need for expensive solutions such as briquetting, extraction, or full wet processing.
